First time at Subway in Canada
Ordering at Subway is a conversation that happens in a fixed order while you walk along a counter, and that is the only genuinely confusing part. Here is the sequence, so you know what is coming.
- 1. Size
Six-inch or footlong. A footlong is two six-inches end to end, and the published figures are usually a little under double, not exactly double, which is why we never present one as twice the other.
- 2. Bread
Named on a board behind the counter. Italian is the plain default; Italian Herbs & Cheese is the most assertive. You can also have it as a wrap, a salad (no bread at all) or a bowl, and the published figures differ for each.
- 3. Toasted?
Yes or no. It goes through a conveyor oven for about a minute. It changes nothing in the nutrition figures; it changes the texture of the bread and melts the cheese.
- 4. Cheese
Usually included in the price. If you say nothing you will often be given the default, so ask if you want a specific one, or none.
- 5. Vegetables
Point at what you want, or say "everything". These are the cheapest calories on the counter: most are under 10 kcal for the standard portion.
- 6. Sauce
Where the calories actually arrive. A standard portion of a mayonnaise-based sauce can add more than the cheese and the vegetables together. Our sauce pages give the published figure per portion.
- 7. Make it a meal?
A drink and a side, priced together. Worth knowing this is the upsell step so it does not catch you mid-sentence.
The sauce decision, in numbers
The step most worth thinking about. These are the published figures for a standard portion, lightest first.
| Mustard, Yellow | 10 kcal |
|---|---|
| Ketchup | 15 kcal |
| Barrel Bourbon BBQ Sauce | 20 kcal |
| Hot Honey | 30 kcal |
| Nashville-Style Hot Sauce | 35 kcal |
Words you will hear
- Footlong
- A twelve-inch sub. Two six-inches, in one piece.
- B.M.T.
- Subway’s own abbreviation, now just the name of a specific cold-cut sub. It does not describe a bread or a size.
- Sandwich artist
- The person making your order. It is the official job title, not a joke.
- Sub vs wrap vs salad vs bowl
- The same fillings, in bread, in a tortilla, in a bowl without bread, or in a larger bowl with more protein. Each has its own published nutrition figures, which is why they are separate pages here.
