How ordering at Subway actually works

Subway is the only major chain where you assemble the order out loud, in real time, while someone waits. That is the entire reason it feels harder than it is. The questions come in a fixed order and there are only about seven of them.

The sequence

Size, then bread, then whether you want it toasted, then cheese, then vegetables, then sauce, then whether you want it as a meal. You move along the counter as you go, and the person serving you moves with you.

You do not have to wait to be asked. Saying "six-inch Italian herbs and cheese, toasted, no cheese" at the start is normal and speeds everything up, because it answers the first four questions in one sentence.

Ordering off-menu

Everything on the board is a preset, not a fixed product. A named sandwich is a bread plus a protein plus a default set of toppings, so you can ask for any of it differently: a different bread, no cheese, extra of one vegetable, a sauce from another sandwich.

The thing people hesitate over is asking for something that is not pictured. It is routine. The only answers you are likely to get are "we can do that" or "we have run out".

Ordering in the app versus at the counter

The app shows you every option as a list with checkboxes, which removes the pressure of the sequence entirely, and it is the easier first experience. The trade is that you cannot see the vegetables, so "extra" is an abstraction rather than a thing you can point at.

In store, pointing works. "That one, and a bit more of that" is a complete sentence at a Subway counter.

The step that actually changes the numbers

Vegetables are the cheapest thing on the counter in calorie terms, and sauce is the most expensive. The gap between a light sauce and a mayonnaise-based one, in a standard portion, is larger than every vegetable on the sandwich put together.

That is the one decision worth making deliberately rather than by habit. Each sauce has its own page here with the published figure for a standard portion.

Common questions

Do you have to order a named sandwich?
No. Every named sandwich is a preset combination of components that you can change freely, and you can also build one from scratch without naming anything.
Does toasting change the nutrition?
No. Toasting changes the texture of the bread and melts the cheese; the published figures are the same either way.
What is a "sandwich artist"?
The official job title for the person making your order. It is not a joke and it is what the staff are called internally.

For the figures themselves, see the Canada menu or the country-specific first-timer guide.
